    Campus Concierge Inc. is a start-up company located in Fayetteville, Arkansas that provides academic support services to college students. Since 2013, the company has seen successful operations and is ready to expand. In this thesis, background research was performed to amend the business plan in order to better reflect the business model and highlight opportunities for growth. These opportunities include developing the brand image, increasing current operations, and extending branches to other locations. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate expansion options as well as funding opportunities that are feasible for the company and to deliver a tangible product Campus Concierge can use to acquire capital. Due to the sensitive nature of the financial content, information has been omitted from the public version.     Multi-thermal dynamics and energetics of a coronal mass ejection in the low solar atmosphere

    The aim of this work is to determine the multi-thermal characteristics and plasma energetics of an eruptive plasmoid and occulted flare observed by Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO/AIA). We study an event from 03-Nov-2010 (peaking at 12:20UT in GOES soft X-rays) of a coronal mass ejection and occulted flare which demonstrates the morphology of a classic erupting flux rope. The high spatial, and time resolution, and six coronal channels, of the SDO/AIA images allows the dynamics of the multi-thermal emission during the initial phases of eruption to be studied in detail. The Differential Emission Measure (DEM) is calculated, using an optimised version of a regularized inversion method (Hannah & Kontar 2012), for each pixel across the six channels at different times, resulting in emission measure maps and movies in a variety of temperature ranges. We find that the core of the erupting plasmoid is hot (8-11, 11-14MK) with a similarly hot filamentary "stem" structure connecting it to the lower atmosphere, which could be interpreted as the current sheet in the flux rope model, though is wider than these models suggest. The velocity of the leading edge of the eruption is 597-664 km s1^{-1} in the temperature range \ge3-4MK and between 1029-1246 km s1^{-1} for \le2-3MK. We estimate the density (in 11-14 MK) of the erupting core and stem during the impulsive phase to be about 3×1093\times10^9 cm3^{-3}, 6×1096\times10^9 cm3^{-3}, 9×1089\times10^8 cm3^{-3} in the plasmoid core, stem and surrounding envelope of material. This gives thermal energy estimates of 5×10295\times10^{29} erg, 1×10291\times10^{29} erg and 2×10302\times10^{30} erg. The kinetic energy for the core and envelope is slightly smaller. The thermal energy of the core and current sheet grows during the eruption, suggesting continuous influx of energy presumably via reconnection.Comment: Submitted to A&A: in revisio

    The impact of retirement on physical activity

    Most adults do not achieve the levels of physical activity currently recommended for a healthy lifestyle. Population surveys suggest that there is a linear decline of activity levels with age, yet physical activity has many health benefits for older adults. If these are to be more widely adopted among older people, health policy and promotion require an understanding of the factors that influence decreasing activity with age. This study examined the patterns of physical activity of 699 participants in the West of Scotland Twenty-07 Study who were aged 60 years when interviewed in 1991 and followed up four to five years later. It examined the factors that influenced whether or not the subjects achieved currently recommended levels of activity, by applying random effects models with a seasonal adjustment. It was found that higher levels of physical activity associated with a healthier lifestyle, and that socio-economic factors played a minor role in determining the level of physical activity. A substantial amount of physical activity occurred at work but was lost by those who had retired, for while those who were not working were more physically active at home or at leisure than those in work, the majority of the sample did too little physical activity outside work to compensate for the loss of work-based activity. One conclusion is that health promotion initiatives that encourage people to become more physically active should be targeted at those who are about to retire

    Eccentricity fluctuations in an integrated hybrid approach: Influence on elliptic flow

    The effects of initial state fluctuations on elliptic flow are investigated within a (3+1)d Boltzmann + hydrodynamics transport approach. The spatial eccentricity (ϵRP\epsilon_{\rm RP} and ϵpart\epsilon_{\rm part}) is calculated for initial conditions generated by a hadronic transport approach (UrQMD). Elliptic flow results as a function of impact parameter, beam energy and transverse momentum for two different equations of state and for averaged initial conditions or a full event-by-event setup are presented. These investigations allow the conclusion that in mid-central (b=59b=5-9 fm) heavy ion collisions the final elliptic flow is independent of the initial state fluctuations and the equation of state. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that most of the v2v_2 is build up during the hydrodynamic stage of the evolution. Therefore, the use of averaged initial profiles does not contribute to the uncertainties of the extraction of transport properties of hot and dense QCD matter based on viscous hydrodynamic calculations.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, minor revision of figures and conclusion, as published in PR

    D-Cycloserine as an augmentation strategy for cognitive behavioral therapy of anxiety disorders.

    The goal of this review is to examine the clinical studies on d-cycloserine, a partial glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate agonist, as an augmentation strategy for exposure procedures during cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders. Although cognitive behavioral therapy and anxiolytic medications are more effective than placebo for treating anxiety disorders, there is still considerable room for further improvement. Traditional combination strategies typically yield disappointing results. However, recent studies based on translational research have shown promise to augment the neural circuitry underlying fear extinction with pharmacological means. We discuss the current state of the literature, including inconsistencies of findings and issues concerning the drug mechanism, dosing, and dose timing. D-cycloserine is a promising combination strategy for cognitive behavioral therapy of anxiety disorders by augmenting extinction learning. However, there is also evidence to suggest that d-cycloserine can facilitate reconsolidation of fear memory when exposure procedures are unsuccessful

    There are no author-identified significant results in this report. A program has been completed to print out the radiance values for any specified combination of the four MSS bands for a specified sector of an image. A program to map intensities for any band is being written. An investigation of the characteristics of cities in the Brevard County area, as seen by ERTS-1, has been started. Investigation has not been completed, however, results initially obtained are presented. A Digicol viewer was used to determine the relative reflectance of cities (and other developed sectors) in the area. This was done by a combination of two methods: (1) varying the offset control so that the brightest spot appeared first, followed by the second brightest spot; and (2) reading the relative light transmissions at selected positions. A band 5 image was used and the results, in order of maximum reflectance apparent within the sector, are given

    Encouraging the perceptual underdog: positive affective priming of nonpreferred local–global processes

    Two experiments examined affective priming of global and local perception. Participants attempted to detect a target that might be present as either a global or a local shape. Verbal primes were used in 1 experiment, and pictorial primes were used in the other. In both experiments, positive primes led to improved performance on the nonpreferred dimension. For participants exhibiting global precedence, detection of local targets was significantly improved, whereas for participants exhibiting local precedence, detection of global targets was significantly improved. The results provide support for an interpretation of the effects of positive affective priming in terms of increased perceptual flexibility

    Guano morphology has the potential to inform conservation strategies in British bats

    Bats are primary consumers of nocturnal insects, disperse nutrients across landscapes, and are excellent bioindicators of an ecosystem’s health, however four of the seventeen Great British species are listed as declining. In this study we aim to investigate the link between bat guano morphology and diet, specifically looking at the ability to predict 1) species, 2) dietary guild, and 3) bat size, using guano morphology alone. Guano from 16 bat species sampled from across Great Britain were analysed to determine various morphological metrics. These data were coupled with diet data obtained by an extensive literature review. It was found that guano morphology overlapped too much to make predictions on the species of bat which deposited the guano, however, in some cases, it could be used to indicate the dietary guild to which the bat belonged. In general, guano morphology seems more correlated to diet than species. This enables the identification of the most important prey taxa within a local environment; a crucial step for informing conservation strategies
